Some healing requires more than 50 minutes at a time.
The 50-minute therapy hour was never designed for trauma work.
It was designed for conversation; for check-ins, processing the week, and skill practice. For many therapeutic concerns, the 50-minute session works fine, but trauma work is different.
Effective trauma processing follows a specific arc. You need time to prepare your nervous system, time to actually move through the material, and time to close, ground, and integrate before you walk back out into your life. When that process gets cut short you risk leaving feeling activated, raw, and ungrounded - potentially worse than when you came in.
In a 50-minute session you might get through preparation and the beginning of processing only to have time stop before anything feels really resolved. You leave with the wound feeling more opened and not fully treated.
Intensive sessions give you the opportunity to experience the full arc of preparation, processing, and integration.
What Intensive Therapy Looks Like
Intensive sessions are extended, focused blocks of therapeutic work - typically two or three hours - designed to give trauma processing the space and momentum it actually needs. This is therapy done the way trauma work is meant to be done, with enough time to go deep, stay there long enough for real processing to happen, and come back to solid ground before you leave.
Sessions are structured around your specific goals and what we’re working on together. We begin with preparation and grounding, move into the deeper processing work - whether that’s EMDR, ART, Inner Child Work, or a combination - and close with integration and stabilization before you leave. You’ll always know what we’re doing and why, and we will always move at your nervous system’s pace.
Intensive sessions can be scheduled as a one-time experience for a specific piece of work, or as a recurring format for clients who want to do ongoing trauma processing with more depth and momentum than weekly 50-minute sessions allow.
You’re doing EMDR or ART and finding that 50-minute sessions feel rushed or incomplete
You leave sessions feeling more activated than settled
You want to make meaningful progress without waiting weeks between sessions
Your schedule makes weekly appointments difficult to sustain
You’re ready to go deep and want the time and space to actually do it
Intensive therapy is a good fit if…
A Note for Flagstaff Residents:
Flagstaff will always be a special place to me. I have a deep appreciation for this community. Intensive therapy is one of the most effective formats for trauma work, and one of the least available in smaller markets. Finding a therapist who offers extended EMDR, ART, or PIT intensives in Northern Arizona is genuinely rare.
Online intensive sessions mean Flagstaff residents have access to the same specialized format as anyone in a major metro, from the comfort of their own home. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a willingness to show up for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A regular therapy session is 50 minutes - enough time for check-ins, skill building, and lighter processing work. An intensive session is two to three hours, designed specifically for deeper trauma processing work that requires more time to do safely and effectively. The difference isn’t just length, it’s what becomes possible when you have enough time to fully open, process, and close without being interrupted by the clock.
-
Intensive sessions are charged at my standard rate of $225 per hour. A two-hour session is $450 and a three-hour session is $675.
-
Yes, and this is actually one of the primary reasons intensive sessions exist. A core part of every intensive is the closing and integration phase, which ensures you leave feeling grounded and stable rather than activated. You’ll always have time to settle before you leave.
-
This is something we’ll figure out together during the consultation. Generally, intensive sessions are recommended for clients doing active trauma processing work - especially EMDR, ART, and PIT - where extended time allows for more complete processing cycles. Regular weekly sessions work well for skill building, ongoing support, and lighter processing work.
-
Yes, some clients do a combination. They might have a regular weekly session for ongoing support and check-ins, and schedule intensive sessions periodically for deeper processing work. We will figure out the right structure for you based on your goals and schedule.
-
The first step is scheduling a free 20-minute consultation so we can talk through what you’re working on and whether intensive sessions are the right fit. From there I’ll put together a recommendation for session length and frequency based on your specific goals.
-
Yes, and it can work really well remotely. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. I’ll walk you through everything you need to set up before we begin. Many clients actually find that doing intensive work from their own home, in a space that already feels safe and comfortable, supports the depth of the processing.
-
For clients doing active trauma processing, intensive sessions are often more cost effective than they appear. A two-hour intensive gives you more actual processing time than an entire month of 50-minute weekly sessions where a significant portion of each session goes to check-ins, preparation, and closing. For trauma work specifically, the intensive format doesn’t just save time, it actually produces better outcomes because the processing gets to complete rather than getting cut off mid-session.
Let’s give the work the space it deserves.
